Streams in the Wasteland
http://gemhelen.wordpress.com/2005/10/17/streams-in-the-wasteland/
I hope you are able to enjoy this holiday season without too much stress. It is sad that there are so many things that crowd out the true meaning of the season. May you experience the peace that comes from remembering the Christ child.
May you also experience the love we are sending your way via this cyberspace Christmas greeting!

Known…seen…loved.
I know this is completely tacky – but I love it anyway. This falls under the category, “Don’t take yourself too seriously.” See if you can find the “Marcia Brady” move in this.
I thought I would periodically throw out a link to a blog entry from the past. Not many people likely go back and peruse entries from 2005, so I thought I would make it easier for you to see some things you might have missed.
Here’s a great quote from Susannah Wesley:
Quite a few years ago my friend, Donna, and I were waxing eloquent about life. We would say to each other, “When am I going to be old enough to….” (fill in the blank). The blank could have been anything – wear what I want, think what I want, say what I want, not care what others think, etc. I’m feeling this more and more as I get older. Am I really going to wait until I’m 83 to start being comfortable in my own skin? I think not.
When we were in Sacramento for Thanksgiving, our family went out to eat at Joe’s Crab Shack. There was this amazing sign hanging from the ceiling (as are lots of other kitschy things). I snapped a pic of it (to my husband’s dismay). I have to admit, the sign is demeaning. But to be fair, the other side of the sign says “women.” Anyway, I proudly wave this sign here today. Today is the day to do be who you are and do what you love without letting your own self doubt stand in your way.
This morning as I was driving home from dropping off Christopher at school I was listening to Christmas music blaring on the radio. Ok – so I wasn’t just listening, I was also singing. And maybe it was me blaring. I was having a great time until I realized I might look weird to other drivers moving my lips when no one else was in the van. Then I realized that 1) are other people really looking at me? I don’t think so; 2) even if they are, who cares! I’m too old not to sing at the top of my lungs when the mood strikes. So let me encourage you – don’t worry about what other people think. Sing, sing a song, sing out loud, sing out strong! (Can I help it if I grew up on Karen Carptenter?).
Happy Thursday!
